An event titled "Bloody January" was held at the Gabala Region Heydar Aliyev Center on January 14th, 2020. It was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the January 20th tragedy. The event started with a moment of silence in memory of the martyrs. Then, the center's employee Aygun Mammadova told about the tragedy in her speech. It was noted that the military units of the Soviet Union, which entered Baku on January 19, 1990 at 23:30, without declaring a state of emergency, massacred civilians; hundreds of people were killed, wounded and missing. As a result of the illegal deployment of Soviet troops, 146 people were killed, 744 injured and 841 illegally arrested in Baku and Azerbaijan regions. The military destroyed about 200 houses and apartments, 80 cars, including ambulances. Ambulancemen and police officers were among the killed people as well. On March 31, 1998, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev signed a Decree to institute an honorary title of “January 20th Martyr” for perpetuation of the memory of people who sacrificed themselves for the freedom of Azerbaijan in January 1990.
