The 20th of January was marked in Gabala as a symbolic day of struggle for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
January 20, 1990, which has a special place in the history of the national liberation struggle of the Azerbaijani people, is commemorated annually at the state level, as a day of commemoration of people who were lost and died for the independence and freedom during the resistance to the strong empire. A series of commemorative events were held in the settlements in accordance with the "Action Plan for the Twenty-Ninth commemoration of the 20-th January National Mourning Day", approved by the decree of the head of Gabala District Executive Power. The 20th of January massacre was characterized as a symbol of heroism for the freedom and independence of the Azerbaijani people at the events organized in all the secondary schools, cultural and educational institutions, offices and organizatios of the district. Stands reflecting January 20 tragedy, painting exhibitions, poetry, essay writing, literary and artistic compositions were organized In cultural-educational institutions and events on other subjects have been implemented for the fostering of the patriotic spirit in pupils. Residents of the region visited the Alley of Martyrs in the city on the occasion of the National Mourning Day. The Surahs of the Qur'an were recited to the souls of martyrs. Visitors laid flowers to the complex erected in commemoration of those who were killed for the liberation of our people. The people of Gabala never forget those who sacrificed their lives for the motherland on that gruesome night and always honor their dear memories.
