The 80th anniversary and the 10th congress of the Azerbaijan Geographical Society (AGS) were held in Gabala.
With the support of the Institute of Geography named after academician Hasan Aliyev of ANAS, the 80th anniversary and the X congress of the Azerbaijan Geographical Society (AGS) was held in Gabala. Speaking at the event, the President of the AGS, academician Ramiz Mammadov, noted that the Azerbaijan Geographical Society, which plays a coordinating and guiding role in the development of science in the country, has become an influential organization. In his report on the topic “Azerbaijan Geographical Society for 80 years”, the academician told about the history of this organization, outstanding scientists who led it, structural and branch departments, priority areas, international relations, publishing, geographical education in secondary and higher educational institutions, achievements, public relations, eco-tours and so on. He noted that the researches of geographers are focused on the strengthening and development of the country's economy. The obtained important scientific results are widely used in various sectors of the country's economy, in the efficient use of natural resources and in environmental protection work. During the plenary session the reports on the following themes were listened: "Achievements, problems of physical geography and ways to bring them to the public when studying the nature of Azerbaijan", "Human geography: economic, social and demographic research, the role of the AGS in the socialization of sustainable development", "The main features of global climate change in Azerbaijan", "The current state of development of the Caspian Sea, its role in the socio-economic life of Azerbaijan", etc. Then there were discussions on topics and suggestions were made. The draft resolution of the congress, distributed in advance among the participants, was adopted in the second reading, taking into account the proposals. In conclusion, organizational issues were considered. 23 members of the Presidium were approved. Academician Ramiz Mammadov, once again, was elected President of the Azerbaijan Geographical Society, Associate Professor Maharram Hasanov - First Vice President, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Shakar Mamedova and Ph.D. in Geography Shahin Panakhov - Vice-Presidents.
