The Armenian army continues to arm itself with weapons purchased from foreign countries on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.

15 August 2020 | 04:00

On July 12, 2020, the Armenian armed forces unexpectedly hit the positions of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the direction of Tovuz region with artillery fire and received a worthy response from our army, despite the sudden attack. As a result of the investigations, it became clear that the Armenian government was preparing for this provocation from the beginning. One of these facts is that a few days before the start of the war and during the escalation of the conflict, a large number of weapons were sent to Armenia from Serbia, including mortars and ammunition of various calibers. Serbia’s actions caused confusion and ambiguous reactions in Azerbaijani society. It could not be otherwise. Indeed, in difficult times, Serbia has always felt the support of Azerbaijan. A few months ago, official Baku sent humanitarian aid to Belgrade to fight the coronavirus. In addition, Azerbaijan does not recognize the independence of Kosovo and has repeatedly stated its unequivocal support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia. The reaction of the Azerbaijani government to the fact that Serbia sold weapons to Armenia was not long in coming. According to the information given from press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Serbian Chargé d’Affaires in our country Danica Vejnović was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan related to this information and it was expressed by the Ministry that the unfriendly step of the Serbia supporting the Armenia’s aggressive policy and the ongoing aggression against the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan caused deep regret among the Azerbaijani people and leadership. Serbian Minister of Trade and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic said that Baku’s voice in international organizations is very important for Serbia. We must now talk to the representatives of the Azerbaijani government and not allow this situation to damage our relations in any way, we must do our best to prevent similar situations in the future. On August 7, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic called President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to express his regret over Armenia’s use of Serbian-made weapons during the events on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in July as a result of Armenian provocation, and noted that a high-level delegation of Serbia will be sent to Azerbaijan in the near future to investigate the situation. In this context, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of the National Security Council and Minister of Internal Affairs Nebojsa Stefanovic told reporters during his visit to Azerbaijan: “I believe that through these visits and meetings we will achieve a higher level of cooperation. Our goal is to strengthen cooperation not only in the field of security, but also in other fields. At the same time, at today’s meeting, we discussed cooperation in the field of security and agreed to expand cooperation in the exchange of sensitive information, the fight against terrorism and other important directions. In addition, a few days after the violation of the ceasefire by Armenia - from July 17 to August 4, 7 flights of weapons were transported by plane from Russia to Armenia. As Georgia does not allow the transportation of weapons from its air boundary, the plane flights were transported through three foreign countries, including Rostov-Minvod-Aktay-Turkmenbashi-Novsher-Rasht-Mehri-Yerevan. It should be noted that Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, despite having close political and economic relations with Azerbaijan, agreed to transport weapons over their airspace to Armenia, which is hostile to Azerbaijan. The weapons provided by Russia to Armenia in recent days include “Krasukha”, “Avtobaza” and “Nebo-M” from radio electronic means of combat. With this technique, it is possible to “turn off” the radio conversations of the target country, listen and use it against unmanned combat units. It should also be noted that Russia sells its weapons to Armenia not at the world weapons market price, but at the domestic market price, which is very cheap for Armenia. It is unknown on what grounds Russia sells weapons to Armenia. Thus, there is no information in the mass media of both countries about when the weapons sales agreement was signed. On August 12, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev called President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and informed him about the provocation committed by Armenia in the direction of Tovuz region of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on July 12-16, and noted that servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan and one civilian were killed as a result of the act of aggression. The head of state said that many houses were destroyed and rendered useless as a result of artillery fire of villages and settlements along the border by the Armenian armed forces, noting that the main purpose of the Armenian military attack was to involve third parties in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. At the same time, President of Russia was informed that the intensive nature of the transportation of military cargo from Russia to Armenia since July 17 to the present after the end of the conflicts occurred caused concern and serious questions in Azerbaijani society. Immediately after the military conflict occurred on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, President Ilham Aliyev said that the volume of military cargo transported from Russia to Armenia using the airspace of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Armenia exceeded 400 tons and stressed that the main purpose of the phone call was to clarify this issue. We believe that the misunderstanding between Azerbaijan and Serbia, Azerbaijan and Russia will be resolved, and the interstate relations will be regulated..
