An event in connection with the 25th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy was held in the Police Department of Gabala Region. Opening the event with the welcoming speech, Head of Police Department, Lieutenant-Colonel Ehtibar Abduyev spoke about the genocide committed in Azerbaijan by the Soviet Army on the night of January 19 to 20, 1990.
He noted that the murders committed on the same night by the military machine of the former Soviet State against the civilian Azerbaijani people are serious crimes against humanity, unprecedented crackdown on the people that stood up and fought for national freedom and territorial integrity of the country. Participants of the event commemorated with great respect martyrs of January.
The speakers talked about the criminal essence of the totalitarian Soviet regime on the eve of its fall, the valour of sons and daughters of Azerbaijan who had shown heroism and sacrificed their lives for the freedom and sovereignty of the motherland.
