National Mourning Day was held.
January 20, 1990, which takes a special place in the history of the national liberation struggle of Azerbaijani nation, is marked every year at the state level as the memorial day of those killed and went missing while showing resistance against the strong empire for the independence and freedom. A series of commemorative events were held in residential areas according to the “Action plan on the twenty-sixth anniversary of January 20, National Mourning Day”, approved by the order of the Head of Gabala Region Executive Power. In the events held at all secondary schools, cultural and educational institutions, offices and organizations of the region, massacre of January 20 was characterized as a heroism symbol of Azerbaijani people for freedom and independence. Stands, art exhibitions, poetry, essay competitions, literary and artistic compositions, reflecting the tragedy of January 20, were organized at cultural and enlightenment and educational institutions, events on the other topics towards instilling patriotic spirit among students were held. On January 19 the first lessons were dedicated to the incidents of January 20 and the heroic struggle of our martyrs. Today state flags of Azerbaijan were lowered in the region in connection with the twenty-sixth anniversary of the tragedy of January 20. Mr. Sabuhi Abdullayev, the Head of the Region Executive Power, employees of REP office, all labour groups and public representatives visited the Alley of Martyrs in the city in connection with the National Mourning Day. Surahs from the Quran were recited for the martyrs to lay to rest. The visiting people laid flowers to magnificent memorial complex of the victims who died for the freedom of our nation. The Gabala natives will never forget the people who sacrificed their lives for the motherland at that dreadful night and highly commemorate their cherished memories.
