19 January 2017 | 00:00

Gabala Telecommunication Center held the commemoration in connection with the 27th anniversary of the tragedy of January 20th. First of all, the participants of the meeting honored the cherished memory of the martyrs, fallen victim for the national independence of Azerbaijan people, with a minute of silence. Then, opening the event, the head of Gabala TCC Etibar Isayev said that the Azerbaijani people not only survived the Bloody January of 1990 as a tragedy, but became heroes. January 20th was the culmination of the national-liberation movement of our people, which began in 1988. The highest bodies of the USSR State Power did not fulfill the constitutional obligation to protect the sovereign rights of the Azerbaijani people. This led to a massive popular movement to defend the country's territorial integrity in 1988. On the other hand the complete confusion of the political leadership of Azerbaijan at the time, the loss of communication with the people, the lack of independence made inevitable its collapse and anarchy. Thus, in the night from January 19 to 20 at the request of the corrupt leadership of Azerbaijan of that time and at the order of the Soviet government, to keep the communist regime, 15,000 troopers were sent to Baku. As a result of the aggression of the Soviet troops, 147 civilians were killed in Baku, more than 700 people were injured, 321 people were missing. It was noted that among the victims were representatives of 5 nations, more than 20 women and children. Speakers at the meeting pointed out that January 20th is not only the day of the tragedy of the Azerbaijani people, but also glorious page of our history written in blood. The Martyrs of January 20th are a symbol of the nation's dignity. It is our duty to always maintain this dignity and pride. The events of January 20th even more formed a sense of national pride. Now we need to maintain and even more strengthen our independence, our freedom.
