The 20th of January was marked in Gabala region as a symbolic day of our people’s struggle for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

The 20th of January in 1990, the date occupying a special place in the history of Azerbaijani people’s national independence struggle, is marked as the commemoration date of people, who died or missed while combating against the powerful empire for the sake of independence and liberty, every year at the state level. A range of memorial events have been held in residential areas in accordance with the “Plan of events related to the twenty eighth anniversary of the January 20, the Day of Nationwide Sorrow” confirmed by the order of the Head of Gabala Region Executive Power. At all events held in regular schools of the region, cultural and educational institutions, administrations and organizations, the massacre of January 20 has been characterized as the symbol of heroism for the freedom and independence of Azerbaijani people. The stands, drawing exhibitions, poetry and essay competitions, literary and artistic compositions, that cover the tragedy of January 20, have been established, and other topical events aimed at instilling the spirit of patriotism among the pupils have been held in the cultural, educational and learning institutions. On January 19, the first lessons were dedicated to the events of January 20 and the heroism struggle of our martyrs. In connection with the Day of Nationwide Sorrow, the residents of the region visited the Martyrs' Lane in the city. Surahs from Qur’an were recited for the souls of the martyrs. The visitors laid flowers to the complex erected for the memory of those who made a martyr of themselves for the independence of our people. The Gabala citizens do not ever forget the people sacrificing their lives for the sake of motherland in that dreadful night, and always cherish their dear memories.
